What is regulator ,regulated power supply and types of regulator ?

 Regulated power supply :-

A DC power supply which maintain constant output voltage irrespective of AC main fluctuation or load variation is known as a regulated DC power supply.

Regulator:-

Block diagram of voltage regulator

As the block diagram constant it consists of ordinary power supply and voltage regulating device. The output ordinary power supply is feed to the voltage regulator which produces the final output. The output voltage remains constant weather the load current change or there is fluctuation in the input AC voltage.
The complete circuit of regulated power supply using a zener diode as voltage regulating device. The regulated power supply is a combination of three circuit.

  1. Bridge rectifier
  2. Capacitor filter
  3. Zener voltage regulator

Waveform

The bridge rectifier convert the Transformer secondary AC voltage at point p into pulsating voltage at point Q .The pulsating DC voltage is applied to the capacitor filter. This filter reduce the pulsating in the rectifier DC output voltage at point R. Finally the zener voltage regulator perform to functions.
1. It reduces the variation in the filter output voltage.
2. It keeps the output nearly constant wether the load current change or there is change in input AC voltage.

There are two types of voltage regulator.
  1. Series voltage regulator
  2. Shunt voltage regulator.
